Aside from hearing about her roasting a chicken for Prince Harry the night he proposed, you probably haven’t heard all that much about what Meghan Markle eats. As a committed yogi and wellness enthusiast, you can probably imagine her diet aims to have her feeling and looking her best! Thanks to her now defunct lifestyle website, The Tig, and a couple of interviews she has done in the past (Best Health, Delish and on the TODAY show!), we have a pretty good idea about her food choices, what she loves to cook, and how she sticks to a healthy routine. Below are some of the key takeaways from each!
SHE STARTS EACH MORNING WITH HOT WATER & LEMON
She began this routine early on, while filming her show Suits. Hot water with fresh squeezed lemon first thing in the morning promotes digestion, fights inflammation, and increases the metabolic rate. It’s kind of like an instant detox first thing in the morning and a great way to start your day! Some other benefits of drinking hot water with lemon include balancing pH levels in your body, reduces joint and muscle pain, flushes out toxins, and is a popular remedy for a number of skin problems too!
SHE ISN’T VEGAN
Despite what the tabloids are saying about her raising her child on a vegan diet, Meghan isn’t even on one herself. She did eat vegan during the work week when filming on Suits, but allowed herself meat and fish on weekends. While she does try to keep plant-based foods a big part of her diet, Meghan looooves her sushi! And did I mention the roasted chicken?! She is also known to love cheese, steak and other non-vegan items.
FOR AN AFTERNOON SNACK, SHE OPTS FOR A GREEN JUICE, ALMONDS OR WHOLE FRUIT
While working on Suits, she would blend apple, kale, spinach, lemon and ginger and bring it to set for an afternoon pick-me-up. She is quoted as saying “I always find that sipping on that is a much better boost than a cup of espresso.” She is also known to snack on whole fruits like apples with nut butter or regular old almonds.
MEGHAN INDULGES ON OCCASION
Considering her lifestyle blog, The Tig, was named after her favorite wine (Tignanello), I think we can all assume she’s a fan of vino. In fact, she told Delish she would skip dessert for wine nine times out of ten! I can’t say I’d do the same – I’ve got the world’s biggest sweet tooth! Some other “treat yourself” foods Meghan indulged in on the weekends while in Toronto included Annie’s boxed macaroni and cheese, french fries and poutine (french fries, gravy and cheese – a delicious Canadian dish!).
